SPANISH II - COURSE SYLLABUS

Spanish / English Dictionary (Suggested, can be used or new)

COURSE SUPPLIES: The student should bring his/her notebook, paper, and a pen or pencil each day to class. Further instructions on the class notebook will be discussed in class. Students: please refrain from using colored writing utensils other than blue or black as that is what I will use to correct your written work.

COURSE DESCRIPTION: The object of this course is to integrate what was learned in Spanish h I with the new second year concepts. Continued emphasis on all communicative skills is stressed. Cultural material will be included in order to promote an appreciation and understanding of the Spanish- speaking community, culture, and civilization.

COMMUNICATIVE OBJECTIVES: Within the context of the target language and culture, the student will:
· Make simple inquiries orally to seek information
· Gather information by reading and listening
· Get people to restate things more simply or more slowly
· Use polite commands
· Try to rephrase
· Repeat statements with interrogative information
· Give more extended personal information in oral and written form
· Express complaints and refuse politely
· Express physical discomforts and needs
· Describe medical and physical needs in simple terms
· Request help in attending to needs and/or uncertainties
· Use terminology for buying basic items in street markets or various stores
· Use terminology for cashing a check and changing money
· Complete writing appropriate sample forms (hotel registration, customs, bank, postal forms, etc.)
· Use a variety of appropriate greetings and leave takings
· Issue and react to simple invitations
· Arrange to meet someone at a specific time, place, and date
· Use common and appropriate telephone phrases
· Relay simple messages in writing
· Draw simple conclusions using contextual clues and/or cognates
· Sing a song and/or recite a poem in the target language


STUDENT EXPECTATIONS:
1. The student will be in his/her seat when the tardy bell rings. Tardies will be dealt with as outlined in the CHS handbook on page 14.
2. The student will bring his/her textbook, notebook, pen or pencil and any other necessary materials to class each day.
3. The student will maintain a well-organized notebook for class work, handouts, notes, etc. and will be organized according to the various components of the course (grammar, vocabulary, homework, etc.)
4. The student should bring his/her books home every night. If there is no written assignment, he/she should review the current topics to be prepared to discuss and practice in class in order to receive participation credit.
5. Above all, the student will demonstrate acceptable classroom behavior, showing respect for others, following instructions, and being attentive in the classroom. Disruptive behavior will not be tolerated as it interrupts classroom instruction and the learning environment of other students.
6. The student will do his /her own work at all times. Any incidence of cheating will be dealt with as outlined in the CHS student handbook on pages 25 – 26.
7. THE STUDENT MAY NOT CHEW GUM OR USE ANY ELECTRONIC DEVICES IN CLASS.
8. The student should feel free to ask questions when further explanation or clarification is needed. I want you to feel comfortable in your classroom environment, have a successful year, and enjoy your class time and learning experience.

GRADING SCALE: A = 90 – 100
B = 80 – 89
C = 70 – 79
F = 0-69

GRADING POLICY: Final semester grades will be calculated as follows:
1. Tests - 25%. There will be at least one test per chapter and approx. 30 – 60% of each test will be based on oral/aural skills**
2. Homework – 10%. Homework will be based on completion and not on accuracy. Each completed assignment will be worth 5 points. Incomplete work will only receive 1 point and 0 for unacceptable work.
3. Quizzes – 20%
4. Participation and Cooperation - 15%. It is up to the student to show the initiative to participate in class and to demonstrate a genuine effort to communicate with the instructor and with other students in communicative activities. The student’s participation is based on him/her being present, prepared with all materials, and actively participating. Students who: sleep in class, work on other subjects, text message, do not do class activities, disrupt class, etc. will not receive any participation credit for that day.
5. Oral / Aural Work – 10%. This grade consists of any speeches, projects, and any selected lab work given throughout the semester.
6. Daily Work – 5%. This grade consists of any practice writings, in-class assignments, etc. Students should take advantage of these graded opportunities to practice in class and to review previous concepts that they might not have yet mastered.
7. Final Exam – 15%.
**Note that at least 40% of the overall final average is based on oral/ aural work.

MAKE-UP POLICY:
1. Consistent daily attendance is essential to learn a foreign language; therefore absences should be avoided when possible.
2. Missed grade work will be made up within 5 school days after the absence occurs. Any work not made up within this time will receive a “0”.
3. Make-ups must be arranged on the day of your return. It is the student’s responsibility to schedule a make-up with the instructor on a mutually convenient date.
4. If you are present on the day that a test/quiz is announced, you are expected to take it if you are in class the day it is given.
5. Missed homework must be shown to me the day after you return to class.
6. If you have TAG or a field trip, you are NOT absent and MUST submit your work for that day. You are responsible for the following day’s assignments.
7. IT IS THE STUDENT’S RESPONSIBILITY TO FIND OUT WHAT HAS BEEN MISSED AND TO HAVE IT IN ON TIME.

EXTRA HELP: Extra help is available whenever needed. Please see me to arrange a mutually convenient time.

RECOVERY POLICY:
1. Opportunities designed to allow students to recover from a low or failing cumulative grade will be allowed when ALL work required to date has been completed and the student had demonstrated a legitimate effort to meet all course requirements, including attendance.
2. Students should contact the teacher concerning the recovery opportunities. Teachers are expected to establish a reasonable time period for recovery work to be completed during the semester. All recovery work must be directly related to course objectives and must be completed ten school days prior to the end of the semester.
3. Teachers will determine when and how students with extenuating circumstances may improve their grades.
